Quickie: The Berzerker – Dissimulate
This is often labeled as industrial death metal/grindcore, but the only real industrial elements on display are the samples and the drum sounds (obviously electronic). It cycles between hyperspeed sections with immensely fast drumming (on this album, it’s live), and some degree of midpaced sections. The riffage is mostly simple, fast, melodic stuff. Overall, a nice simple album with rather extreme aesthetics.
There’s a good deal of stuff on this album that would actually fit in with the old school death metal of the 1980s and 1990s – a lot of riffs that, if slowed down slightly could find a home on the albums of all the Possesseds, Masters, Massacras out there. A lot of people mention grindcore legends Carcass as a general connection – it probably helps that the band put a cover of “Corporal Jigsore Quandary” as a hidden track at the album. There aren’t many changes to the formula – “Painless” has some groove in it, “The Principles and Practices of Embalming” is the longest of the official songs at a frightening 3:25, and so on. Probably not the heaviest album you’ll ever listen to, but it’s quite aggressive and easy to headbang to.
